The volume Present State of Translation Studies in Slovakta is an exception among usually published works on the topic of translation. Its perspective is institutional and geographic. For the first time, it maps the activities of the centers of translation studies in Slovakia.
Translation studies are a discipline with a long history in Slovakia Almost every Slovak university as well as the Slovak Academy of Sciences offers a course in translation studies. The aim of the volume is to provide basic informa tion on study programs, research focus and themes, periodi- cals, international cooperation, and grant projects related to translation studies at universities and research institu- tions. It also includes member profiles and contact addresses, Two articles are of particular interest. In the opening arti- cle, Maria Kusá describes the characteristic aspects of Slovak thought on translation and Edita Gromová's article reviews the history of the Nitra (Slovak) school of translation studies and brings portraits of its founding members Anton Popović and František Miko.
A wide range of translation institutions plays an imporant role in Slovak translation studies: the Summer School of Translation, targeting mainly young and emerging transla tors: Translation Olympics for university students; profes- sional translators associations, which support freelance translators and participate in international organizations (CEATL, FIT, PETRA), or Revue svetovej literatúry, a monthly magazine dedicated excluively to foreign-language literatures.Translation studies in Slovakia are dactic, practical and adid research discipline. The focus of the Slovak school of transla tion is diversified. Translation is understood as a changing manifestation of interlinguistic, interliterary, intercultural and interdisciplinary processes.
