Dickens's compelling drama of guilt, desire, ambition, greed and reconciliation follows the life of Pip, a young orphan on his journey from childhood to adulthood. Brought up by his bullying sister and her gentle husband Joe, a blacksmith, Pip's destiny is changed for ever by his terrifying encounter on the eerie Kent marshes with the convict Magwitch, and by his introduction to the elderly eccentric Miss Havisham and her proud, beautiful ward Estella. Jilted at the altar as a young girl, Miss Havisham now lives in bitter confinement in her crumbling mansion and brings up Estella to break men's hearts - with devasting effect on Pip, who is made to feel ashamed of his humble background. Pip's opportunity to better himself comes when he inherits a fortune from a mysterious donor. Turning his back on his family and friends, he goes to London to become a 'gentleman', but it is only when he discovers the true identity of his anonymous benefactor - with dramatic consequences - that he realises the true value of money, frindship and love.
