This 24-chapter book was prepared in advance of a symposium on which it is based. A comprehensive overview chapter introduces the book, and the remaining chapters are grouped into four sections. The wealth of new physics uncovered experimentally presents an unprecedented puzzle to theoreticians. Many new ideas and exotic approaches and mechanisms have been elucidated in a relatively short time. The first section, on theory, presents nine of these approaches. The recent discovery of superconductivity above 85 K and even above 120 K in compounds that do not contain a rare earth element has added a new dimension to the study of superconductivity. The eight chapters in the section on new materials describe some of these compounds.
