O knihe:

A book about artificial intelligence (AI) sounds like a science fiction novel. This book is about Al and its applications to chemistry. Al has been applied to the field of chemistry since the early 1960s, when, for example, MACSYMA, a computer algebra system, was introduced. Until recently, however, Al has been confined to the ivory towers of academia. No real applications were associated with it. This situation is beginning to change, especially in chemistry. Enough applications are now available to warrant a discussion, which will ideally produce a snowball effect in interest for Al applications. This 28-chapter volume is designed to serve that purpose. The book is divided into five sections. The first section, Expert Systems, is a collection of expert system applications. Computer Algebra, the second section, details chemical applications whose emphasis is on the mathematical nature of chemistry. The interface between algebra and chemical reactions is discussed in the next section, Handling Molecular Structures. The fourth section, Organic Synthesis, describes methods to construct complex organic syntheses using simple one-step reactions. Analytical Chemistry, the final section of this book, is a combination of structure elucidation techniques and instrumental optimizations. Anyone beginning to apply AI techniques to their disciplines will find this book helpful. In particular, chemistry and computer science departments, research-oriented chemical and pharmaceutical companies, and vendors of Al products will benefit from reading Artificial Intelligence Applications in Chemistry.
