Inspector Pascoe may take holidays but death never does - and neither, it seems, does Daziel. A watery accident on a solo trip leads to the Superintendent drying off in Lake House, a rundown mansion.
Its owner, the fulsome Mrs Fielding, has only just burried her husband, but seems more concerned with her future. Daziel's curiosity is aroused - purely professionally, of course - and by the time Pascoe's honeymoon is over, there have been several more deaths and Daziel might have compromised himself beyond redemption.

A Clubbable Woman
Home from the Rugby Club after taking a nasty knock ina match, Sam Connon finds his wife even more uncommunicative than usual. After passing out on his bed for five hours, he comes downstairs to discover communication has been cut off forever - by a hole in the middle of her forehead.
Down at the club, passions run high, on and off the field. This is a home game for Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel who knows all the players, male and female. But Sergeant Peter Pascoe, whose loyalties lie with another code, has a few ideas of his own.
